First Singehanded Undocking from my Slip
On a calm day I did my first solo docking and undocking with S/V Counterpoint, my Bristol 45.5. I was only going as far as the pumpout dock and there were plenty of folks around who would have been willing to help with lines but conditions were great so I went for it.
These are all techniques I have practiced with crew aboard as well. This is just the first time I've done it solo.

How to Throw a Line while Docking
Просмотров 14 тыс.4 года назад
Use this simple technique to throw a line accurately short to moderate distances. This technique has proved adequate during my sailing career aboard recreational vessels. Oftentimes students I teach this technique to make their next throw past the person they're aiming for, over the dock, over the water behind the dock and into the parking lot. No need to swing for the fences when a bunt will s...
How to Lasso a Cleat (or Piling) while Docking
Просмотров 46 тыс.4 года назад
As crew, if you want to be a docking hero, crazy acrobatics are generally necessary. Those acrobatics are very dangerous and I strongly discourage everyone from attempting them. Instead, practice lassoing a cleat from a distance and you'll be able to save a docking attempt without even taking a step, let alone a flying leap! My favorite anecdote about this technique, and the inspiration for thi...

Anchor More Safely with a Dinghy Scout Track

With any simple handheld chartplotter, often as simple as your smartphone with your favorite navigation app installed, you can use this technique to improve your safety margin in sparsely charted areas. I love tips like this that use gear I already have in an unorthodox way, especially when it allows me to enhance safety while I'm out sailing! More information here: savvysalt.com/blog/anchor-mo...

Just being picky. The cleat hitch at about 9 minutes is incorrect. It needs to go to the far end of the cleat as you stated earlier.

As an ASA and US/Sailing Instructor, I can tell you that the one week "zero-to-hero" courses are NOT a good way to get into bareboat chartering. Charter companies want to see a sailing resume that includes boats similar to the one that you will be chartering. I always recommend that my ASA 104 students get a Skippered Charter for their first adventure in new waters. The Skipper will be responsible for helping if anything that goes wrong, they will know the best bars & restaurants in the area, and they LOVE to have crew that is engaged in planning the cruise and sailing the boat.

Fantastic. I just got my hands on a rental Jeanneau 380 and for some reason they want the boat berthed bow in despite being the boat being twin ruddered and the fairway being fairly narrow. This is my exact approach and is a good reminder of how to do it when I'm out of the water.

Hi Guys, brilliant video and great timing for me to have found it !! We are chartering a 47ft mono hull through Sunsail next week and your route ( the standard 8 day route it seems) is almost the same as yours. What was the mooring in Marigot Bay ? After watching your lasso video and this video I noticed you said to coil the lines into loops and I think you did it such that the loops crossed over like an x for each loop. Am I seeing that? If so, what were the hand movements to do that as opposed to making just straight loops? Would a short video on how to loop a line to prevent fouling make a good addition to this playlist?

Nicely done and informative, particularly in comparison to the MD3183/4 Owner's Manual that simply states "Undo the zipper on the wearer's left side, exposing the oral inflator"--with no indication of how to do the non-obvious undoing. Frankly, I find the Manual's discussion of this potentially LIFE SAVING feature remarkably shoddy. btw--to be consistent with Mustang documentation, what your video describes is "oral" inflation (as suggested by your opening comment). In Mustang-speak, "manual" inflation is triggering CO2 inflation by jerking the pull-tab, rather than "automatic" inflation triggererd by water immersion.
